UPPER KEYS

Sep. 15, 2018 Annual Swim for Alligator Lighthouse Website  Since 2013, swimmers participate in a 9-mile roundtrip race from Islamorada to the Alligator Lighthouse and back. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Pool in Islamorada, helping provide scholarship opportunities to those in need, and preserve treasured historic lighthouses on Florida’s coastal waterways.

Sep. 14, 2018 – Sep. 16, 2018   REEF Lionfish Derby for Divers presented by Whole Food Markets  REEF 305-852-0030 Website  Register Friday, Sept. 14 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for those teams not yet registered. Event staged at John Pennekamp State Park 102601 Overseas Hwy. The Captain’s Meeting is mandatory for the team captains, and all team members are encouraged to attend. The team captain must be one of the four participants in the derby, but does not need to be the captain of the boat. Safe collecting and handling techniques and derby rules will be reviewed. Saturday, Sept. 15, collect lionfish from sunrise to sunset; Sunday, Sept. 16 collect lionfish from sunrise to noon. Awards ceremony will begin after scoring is complete.

The History of Diving Museum presents the annual presentation series that spotlights a new topic the third Wednesday of each month, at 7 p.m. Exhibits and museum store stay open late (normal museum admission applies).

 

 

MIDDLE KEYS

Sep. 13, 2018 – Sep. 16, 2018 Marathon International Bonefish Tournament  Website  This challenge recognizes individual and team champions scoring the largest bonefish and permit, and the top anglers in fly and grand slam divisions (for the top spin or fly angler who releases the largest bonefish, permit and tarpon “slam”). The event is one of the few tournaments where anglers can fish without a professional guide.

 

LOWER KEYS

 

Sep. 15, 2018 Florida Keys Eco-Discover Center’s Discovery Saturday: Wild Birds Register at 305-809-4750 Website Discovery Saturday from 10-11 a.m. features learning about the fall migration of birds through the Florida Keys. Representatives from the Key West Wildlife Center will teach children about the great variety of birds that pass through the island chain. Space is limited. The Florida Keys Eco-Discover Center, operated by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, hosts Discovery Saturday for children in kindergarten through fifth grade on the third Saturday of each month. Located in NOAA’s Dr. Nancy Foster Florida Keys Environmental Complex on the Truman Annex waterfront in Key West, the Eco-Discovery Center features more than 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, which interpret the resources and management efforts of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, two national parks, and four national wildlife refuges.

 

Sep. 14, 2018 – Sep. 16, 2018 46th Annual Phil Peterson’s Florida Keys Poker Run drew@petersonsharley.com Website Motorcyclists from throughout the United States are to travel one of America’s most scenic highways to raise money for charity. Riders traverse the Overseas Highway (U.S. Highway 1), the roadway from mainland to the Lower Florida Keys, that features dozens of bridges and long vistas of breathtaking open water. Bikers have a great ride and a fun time, while helping Rotary organizations across the Keys raise college scholarship money for local students.
