Stone Crab Season

 

Those succulent claws, brought to shore fresh daily from the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, will drip with mustard dip on the chins of hungry locals and visitors. A series of food festivals during the season celebrate the sustainable seafood resource throughout the Keys.

Nick Sheahan Dolphin Rodeo

A tournament honoring the memory of Nick Sheahan, a Florida Keys student, funds from this event benefit community scholarships for graduates of Coral Shores High School – more than $30,000 to date. Hosted at Tavernier Creek Marina, entry fee for adults is $100, $25 for kids.

Florida Keys Community Concert Band presents: Young Musician’s Concert

A free, outdoor performance at Founders Park, mile marker 87, at 4 p.m. Performances are outdoors; please bring blankets or lawn chairs. Admission free for all concerts. This is the last performance of the season.

Ocean Life Lecture Series 2012

Presented by Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center, visitors are welcome to participate in the new Ocean Life Lecture Series; topics include Sea Turtles (April 20); Coral Reefs & Human Systems (May 18); World Oceans Day (June 8); Florida Everglades (July 20). Meet-and-greet- reception is at 6 p.m., lecture begins at 7 p.m. Tickets $10 per adult, students are free. Held at the theater inside the Murray E. Nelson Cultural Center, MM 102.

Tarponian Tournament

For enthusiastic tarpon anglers, silver kings mean springtime. This high-energy, three-evening tournament mandates that teams fish with a different captain each evening. Teams also rotate among the three major bridge channels in Marathon, so any potential “hot spots” are shared among all anglers.

6th Annual Marathon Offshore Bull and Cow Dolphin Tournament

 Anglers vie for more than $25,000 in prizes in this boat team event, with seven different divisions. Teams of up to six anglers can register. Awards of up to $10,000 for the largest bull and cow combined – as well as cash prizes for wahoo, tuna and tripletail, grouper and snapper division winners.

Marathon / May 6 – 11

Faro Blanco Invitational Tarpon Tournament

This angling challenge with a 26-year history of fish tales and foolery helps fund the Ronald McDonald Summer Camp program for disabled youngsters. Captains are drawn during the kickoff event, and anglers fish with a different captain each of the three days of fishing, in what is a hugely popular tournament format.

Key West Fishing Tournament

More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In a March kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.

Waterfront Playhouse presents: World Premier of Home Exchange

What happens when you trade houses with total strangers and think you’ve discovered a murder plot? A producer of TV crime shows exchanges her Manhattan apartment with a couple from England. Once in the English cottage, she and her brother (her traveling companion) grow suspicious that something is about to happen to the British husband. A suspenseful comedy in the mold of ‘Deathtrap’ but with a bit of ‘Rear Window’ thrown in for fun. Showtime 8 p.m.

Waterfront Playhouse presents: Crime Scene Photographer

 

“Crime Scene Photographer” is a first-of-its-kind, interactive solve-it-yourself mystery event. Can you solve the mysteries by examining the crime scene photographs? The essential clues are there in plain sight — but how good is your power of observation? Prizes awarded for the correct solutions. Part of Key West Mystery Fest. Derby Day at the Tropic Cinema

Celebrate the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby and the 2nd annual Derby Day at the Tropic; from 3:30 – 7 p.m. the big race will be on the big screen along with plenty of Derby fun, including a hat contest, games of chance, and mint juleps. Partial proceeds benefit the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at the Tropic Box Office (416 Eaton Street) or online. Space is limited.
