The Upper Keys


May. 28, 2018 – Sep. 3, 2018 History of Diving Museum Salutes Military with Free Admission  website305-664-9737   The History of Diving Museum, will once again be participating as a Blue Star Museum. Since the programs’ inception in 2010 HDM has collaborated with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense, along with more than 2,000 museums across America. This unique platform offers free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and up to five family members, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Over 1,500 individuals have benefited by visiting the History of Diving Museum alone.

REEF presents: Fish Identification Class
Website Want to improve your fish identification knowledge? Join us each month for a free fish identification class in REEF’s Interpretive Center, led by REEF volunteers Carlos and Allison Estape. For this month’s class, Carlos and Allison will be discussing Fishes of Bonaire, a location that is home to many different Tropical Western Atlantic fish species. Starts at 7 p.m. at the REEF Campus, MM 98.3 in the median.

Matecumbe Historical Trust presents “29 Points of Interest” Historic Trolley Tour

Enjoy an enlightening trolley ride through time. Guided trolley tours depart at 10 a.m. from the Islamorada Moose Lodge at 81573 Old Highway in Islamorada.The one-hour, colorful and much acclaimed historical tours feature 29 points of interest on the islands of Islamorada. Tickets may be purchased on site or call in advance. Adults are $15, children six and under are free.


June 21, 2018  Third Thursday Art Walk
Third Thursday ArtWalks are held every month throughout the year, offering attendees live music on three stages, performance artists and, of course, original art and hand-crafted jewelry, as well as pottery, sculptures and more! This monthly event has become a focal point of artistic expression, culinary and cultural awareness to the Upper Keys. As the Art District’s business partners remain open during these Third Thursday Art Walk evenings, this indoor/outdoor street festival has become the talk of the Keys, drawing multitudes of people from all over South Florida and beyond each month. The crowds stroll through the Art District, which spans a quarter of a mile of the Old Highway between the historical 1935 Hurricane Monument and the iconic Green Turtle Inn and includes the intersecting street now known as Morada Way, between MM 81 and 82.

Intended for novice anglers, enjoy a weekend of learning and a non-intimidating, fun competition with the Ladies Let’s Go Fishing university organizers. Species include legal inshore and offshore fish. Entry fee $85 per angler/adults, $35/teens age 13 and up, plus optional charter fees per person depending on boat type choice. Or, fish on your own boat. This is a casual tournament with prizes for heaviest offshore fish, longest inshore fish and drawings for prizes of those who caught fish, plus bonus drawings.

Sixth Annual Key Lime Festival
A wacky talent show, pie-eating and cooking contests and other tasty temptations await Key West visitors during the annual Key Lime Festival. Four days of culinary events for every taste are planned, including favorites from past years like the Key Lime Cocktail Sip & Stroll, and new favorites for Key Lime lovers like The Key Lime Pie Hop.

Key West Island Swim: FKCC Swim Around Key West

The officially sanctioned event (June 30) is a 12.5-mile swim clockwise around the island of Key West that is open to all age groups. Individual swimmers and relay teams can compete. The route takes swimmers through the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, ending where they began at Higgs Beach.

Full Moon Kayak Excursion – Final One of Season!

FAVOR/Florida Keys Wildlife Society’s favorite fun fundraising adventure! From 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., launch at Big Pine Kayak Adventures on Bogey Road on Big Pine Key, at the foot of the bridge to No Name Key. This excursion takes you along the mangrove shoreline on No Name where you see firsthand the resilience of our little islands and how the mangroves are slowly regrowing! Join this two hour trip – an easy, relaxing paddle for all skill levels, and as you round the northern point of the island, the highlight – the sun setting in the west as the full moon rises in the east! $25 per person donation includes kayak, gear and experienced guide. Jun. 22, 2018 – Jun. 24, 2018  Fishing 7th Annual That’s What She Shot Spearfishing (TWSS) Tournament
The only Florida Keys spearfishing tournament invites women, men, and juniors to participate in and the public to party dockside to help raise funds for Womankind, a Key West nonprofit medical center that offers affordable healthcare to Keys. The event kicks off on Friday at 7 p.m., with a mandatory captain’s meeting at the new weigh-in station at 6840 Front Street, Stock Island (the dock property between the old Fishbusterz and Hogfish Bar & Grille), and fishing to begin anytime thereafter. Participants must be in line to weigh their grouper, hogfish, and snapper—with bonus points and a prize for the most invasive lionfish— by 5 p.m. on Sunday. After weigh-in, the public can enjoy a party to have fun while making a difference, with all proceeds to benefit Womankind.

More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). The Key West Fishing Tournament strongly encourages the release of game fish. All participating anglers receive certificates noting their catches and qualify for a variety of prizes.
