Third Annual Outdoor Fest
Nature, wildlife and adventure enthusiasts can discover the unique plant, bird and animal species and habitats that make up the Florida Keys ecosystem. The action-packed festival offers an up-close exploration of four Florida Keys national wildlife refuges, spotlighting species including the miniature Key deer found only in the Lower Keys. Most of the family-friendly outdoor adventures and experiences are offered free of charge.

Upper Keys

Art Guild of the Purple Isles presents: 52nd Annual Members’ Judged Show
View and cast your vote! Each Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at The Florida Keys History & Discovery Center at The Islander Resort, MM 82, Islamorada, original works of art are to be displayed by local artists. Art Guild of the Purple Isles is the center for visual art activities in the Upper Keys endeavoring to make art a prominent part of the community.

At 4 pm on Friday, Key West Art Center kicks off a Plein Air tradition ten years in the making with a demonstration by John Clayton. Linger after the demo to enjoy light refreshments, speak with the artist, and pre-register for Plein Air Key West. Artists of ALL levels are encouraged to participate. Saturday, Plein Air Key West begins as artist registration opens promptly at 8 am at the Key West Art Center. All participants must get their canvases stamped during morning registration before heading out to paint at the location of their choice. Friends, family, strangers, and artists alike are invited to enjoy a refreshing array of treats at the Happy Hour Show & Sale from 5 to 7 pm. Come share in the excitement as the winners are announced and CASH PRIZES awarded at 6:15 pm. All Plein Air paintings created that day will be on display and available for purchase. The artist participation fee for Plein Air Key West is $30 for Art Center Members, $35 for non-members.

Enjoy an enlightening trolley ride through time. Guided trolley tours depart at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. from the Islamorada Moose Lodge at 81573 Old Highway in Islamorada.The one-hour, colorful and much acclaimed historical tours feature 29 points of interest on the islands of Islamorada. Tickets may be purchased on site or call in advance. Adults are $15, children six and under are free. Tour dates are March 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31.

  Anglers vie for top-honor trophies for catches of bonefish and redfish in this newly formatted event, appealing to a broader spectrum of anglers. Divisions in the tournament’s new format include bait, artificial and fly. Awards also are to be given for total release points for each species and to the high-point angler for each day. An overall grand champion is to be named for both bonefish and redfish in the three categories.

Jimmy Johnson’s National Billfish Championship

Hosted by Jimmy Johnson, two-time Super Bowl winning coach and former head coach at the University of Miami, this prestigious billfish championship benefits the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a South Florida-based cancer-related research, diagnosis and treatment facility. All anglers on the winning boat receive authentic, custom-designed Jimmy Johnson’s NBC Championship rings.

One of the middle Keys’ signature family events, delicacies from the waters of the Florida Keys highlight this annual munch-fest at Marathon Community Park, mile marker 49 oceanside. Sponsored by Organized Fishermen of Florida and Marathon Chamber of Commerce. Live music, vendor booths, sweets, treats and beverages make for a delectable weekend. An open-air boat show is to be staged at entrance to the festival.


Lower Keys

March Merkin Invitational Permit Tournament
A charity flats-and-fly-only tournament with a twist – in addition to catch and release, anglers earn extra points for tagging their caught fish. Held at the Key West Yacht Harbor Marina on Stock Island.

A kickoff party is to be staged at the home of the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit founders Dennis Beaver and Bert Whitt Feb. 28, and the festival, a 6-week commemoration of the literary icon who lived on the island for thirty-four years, is to continue into April and boasts a full roster of writing and painting contests, film and poetry forums, curator tours of the Tennessee Williams Museum at 513 Truman Avenue, a March 26th birthday party for the playwright, and 2 one-act theatre productions of the Pulitzer-Prize-winner’s work. Presented by the newly-merged Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit and the Key West Art & Historical Society.
