Mar. 30, 2017 – Sep. 4– History of Diving Museum: Spiegel Grove Exhibit
Enjoy a special exhibit celebrating and honoring the Spiegel Grove, intentionally sunk 15 years ago off Key Largo. This exhibits highlights all who served on this great ship, missions it participated in, the efforts in preparing her for sinking and the environmental impact the artificial reef has had on the area. The exhibit is to be on display through Labor Day.

Invasive Lionfish Awareness & Removal Day

Designated an annual event (the first Saturday after Mother’s Day each year), this weekend is to be dedicated to statewide lionfish removal and awareness activities. Coastal counties around the state will be harvesting lionfish in an attempt to remove as many of the invasive critters as possible. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is encouraging all divers to remove as many lionfish on the weekend of May 20-21, no matter where they are in Florida.

Special flies, accurate casts and a bit of luck are the recipe for winning this prestigious challenge, using only a tournament-furnished tippet not greater than 16-pound test. Eligible tarpon must measure at least 48 inches in length to earn release points, and weigh at least 70 pounds for weight points.

Battle in the Bay Dragon Boat Festival
The waters off Sombrero Beach are to be transformed into a swift racecourse for a day of dragon boat racing that involves 20 paddlers moving in unison a combination of strength and teamwork. Sombrero Beach provides a pristine setting and unique, direct-from-the-beach launch for the sleek, 40-foot-long race boats. The festival is free and open to the public. Food, beverages, merchandise and a variety of entertainment are to be available shoreside.

Apr. 6, 2017 – Jul. 31, 2017 -Key West Art Garden 2017 305-296-1504 Florida Keys artists and sculptors are featured in this open-air exhibit at the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden. Exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Explore a unique blend of sculptured art with Mother Nature that enhances both. The Key West Art Garden showcases local artist’s art work made mostly out of recycled materials displayed as part of nature within the beautiful grounds of the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden. Art displayed throughout the garden allows visitors to reignite their sense of exploration finding each treasure and appreciating the workmanship in the nature and art. An opening reception to meet the artists and unveiling is to be held on Wed., April 26 from 4-6 p.m. with art walk to follow.
Apr. 7, 2017 – Nov. 30, 2017 – Key West Fishing Tournament 305-923-5934 More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). The Key West Fishing Tournament strongly encourages the release of game fish. All participating anglers receive certificates noting their catches and qualify for a variety of prizes.

Key Lime Pie-Making Class: Make Your Own Mini-Pie!
Go behind the scenes at Key West’s sweetest spot for key lime pie and learn to make Key Lime Pie Co.’s award-winning recipe of all-natural ingredients. In this class held each Friday, each participant will make his/her own mini key lime pie of graham cracker crust, key lime filling, and whipped topping—tasting encouraged! Experience pie making in our live kitchen—under the tutelage of one of our seasoned pie makers—where thousands of delicious key lime pies are made every week! After creating your mini pie masterpiece, you can pack it up for later or relax and savor right away. Class is approximately 1 hour in duration; $20 per person. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult.

Big Pine Key Lionfish Collecting & Handling Workshop and Dive
Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) is headed south to Big Pine Key to conduct a Lionfish Collecting and Handling Workshop + a free training dive for the first 15 participants to sign up. At the workshop, learn how to safely collect and handle lionfish, and in the afternoon go out as a class to practice skills on a lionfish removal dive, alongside professionals. Experienced and novice lionfish collectors are encouraged to attend. The workshop includes a background of the lionfish invasion, biology/ecology of lionfish, impacts and current research findings. Both the workshop and the dive are FREE, but workshop attendance is required to participate in the dive. Registration is required. Don’t miss out on the fun, sign up today!
