Enjoy a week of action-packed days of outdoor adventures and hands-on activities, including guided birding and nature walks, historical bike rides, kayak excursions, art and photography workshops and more. Co-sponsored by the Friends and Volunteers of Refuges and the Florida Keys Wildlife Refuges. Family fun fairs are to be scheduled for Key Largo and the Lower Keys

The Upper Keys: Islamorada and Key Largo

 

Mar. 7, 2017 – Mar. 10, 2017 Jim Bokor’s Islamorada All-Tackle Bonefish & Redfish Shootout

Anglers vie for top-honor trophies for catches of bonefish and redfish in this newly formatted event, appealing to a broader spectrum of anglers. Divisions in the tournament’s new format include bait, artificial and fly. Awards also are to be given for total release points for each species and to the high-point angler for each day. An overall grand champion is to be named for both bonefish and redfish in the three categories.

Each Wednesday the Center is to host a weekly Bloodline mini-binge, showing two episodes at 2 p.m., from seasons 1 & 2 of the popular Netflix original series. Free for members, non-members $5. Theater has limited seating (35).

Hosted by Jimmy Johnson, two-time Super Bowl winning coach and former head coach at the University of Miami, this prestigious billfish championship benefits the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a South Florida-based cancer-related research, diagnosis and treatment facility. All anglers on the winning boat receive authentic, custom-designed Jimmy Johnson’s NBC Championship rings.

Enjoy an enlightening trolley ride through time. Guided trolley tours depart at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. from the Islamorada Moose Lodge at 81573 Old Highway in Islamorada.The one-hour, colorful and much acclaimed historical tours feature 29 points of interest on the islands of Islamorada. Tickets may be purchased on site or call in advance. Adults are $15, children six and under are free.

The Middle Keys- Marathon

Join us for the viewing on the large screen in the Community Room at 6 p.m., to be followed by a discussion. Free popcorn. The schedule: Wed., March 8, “Trumbo”; Wed., March 15, “One of the Hollywood Ten”; Wed., March 22, “Thirteen Days”; Wed., March 29, “Path to War.” The Marathon Public Library is at 3251 Overseas Highway, Oceanside.

The Connections Project innovative road show continues with a reception at the Shady Palm Gallery featuring a vibrant 24-foot mosaic mural created by local artists and art lovers. The exhibit is open to the public. The large-scale mosaic mural features art by almost 400 Florida Keys residents and is touring the island chain to celebrate the connection between the community and local cultural initiatives.

One of the middle Keys’ signature family events, delicacies from the waters of the Florida Keys highlight this annual munch-fest at Marathon Community Park, mile marker 49 oceanside. Sponsored by Organized Fishermen of Florida and Marathon Chamber of Commerce. Live music, vendor booths, sweets, treats and beverages make for a delectable weekend. An open-air boat show is to be staged at entrance to the festival.

Local talents Kyla Piscopink and Ben Pegg join forces for a night of original music and choreography. The innovative founder of Dance Key West, Kyla tells stories through a combination of structured movement and improvisation. Ben Pegg’s smooth vocals recall the late Jeff Buckley and his virtuosic guitar playing is rightly compared to Michael Hedges and Stanley Jordan.

The painting day is begins at 8 a.m. at the Art Center where the artist/participants’ canvases are stamped before heading out to paint at the location of their choice. The public is invited to enjoy light refreshments at the Happy Hour Show & Sale from 5 – 7 p.m. and share in the excitement when the first, second and third place winners are announced and cash prizes are awarded at 6:15 p.m. All paintings created that day will be on display and for sale that evening and the following week.

Tennessee Williams’ semi-autobiographical play about a family trapped by love and circumstances. Fierce commitment, stifling expectations, and burgeoning sexuality drive this Pulitzer Prize winning play. Presented in conjunction with the Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration, produced annually by the Tennessee Williams Exhibit in Key West. Performances at 7 p.m., March 15-18 and 22-25 at Parish Hall behind St Paul’s Episcopal Church at 401 Duval Street.
