Keys History & Discovery Center presents: Weekly Matinee Movie Series

“Key Largo.” A hurricane swells outside, but it’s nothing compared to the storm within the hotel at Key Largo. There, sadistic mobster Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) holes up – and holds at gunpoint hotel owner Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall), her invalid father-in-law (Lionel Barrymore) and ex-GI Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart). Released in 1948, this movie was not actually shot in Key Largo. Not rated. Movie start time is 2 p.m. Free for members, non-members is $5. For an additional $6, non-members can arrive early and enjoy the museum’s many exhibits. The Discovery Center is located at MM 82, on the property of the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., enjoy a pancake breakfast then browse and buy island treasures, baked goods, crafts and art. There is something for everyone, the flea market is located at the flashing light in Layton, MM 68.5. Layton Garden Club raises monies for Keys-based charities.

Islamorada Bartenders Sailfish Ope
This fun day of fishing is only for actively employed bartenders and restaurant employees. Trophies are awarded to individual anglers as well as the bar a team represents, with the huge perpetual trophy going to the winners along with bragging rights for the whole year.

The February theme is “Cinematheque,” a free movie series every Wednesday night. February is Black History Month. Join us for the viewing on the large screen in the Community Room at 6 p.m., to be followed by a discussion. Free popcorn. Month’s schedule: Wed. Feb. 1, “A Raisin in the Sun”; Wed., Feb. 8, “Soul of the Game”; Wed., Feb. 15, “The Intruder”; Wed., Feb. 22, “Invictus.” The Marathon Public Library is at 3251 Overseas Highway, oceanside, Marathon.

Fitness for a Cause: Paws in the Park

Join the Marathon campus of the Florida Keys SPCA in Key Colony Beach for the inaugural mile walk for the animals. Bring your well behaved four-legged pet on a leash or just join them on two legs for outdoor fitness and to help raise money to support adoption, spay/neuter, behavior, foster, humane animal control and outreach programs. Registration begins at 9 a.m., at City Hall Park. Suggested donation $10. Registrants donating $40 or more receive a FKSPCA T-Shirt. All registrants are to receive a free raffle ticket for chance to with a $100 Plaza Grill restaurant Grand Prize certificate.

Poor Girls Sailfish Tournament

A large regional charity competition that typically draws more than 200 anglers, the challenge offers ten trophies, including first-, second- and third-place teams, grand champion and runner-up grand champion anglers. Entry fee includes fishing, kick-off party and awards banquet. Poor Girls events are held in conjunction with Casting for Cats, a volunteer group who freely gives time and support for the feral cats of the Upper Keys. The non-profit charity donates all the money raised for stays in the Upper Keys at the spay/neuter clinic and caring for feral cats. Female anglers compete for awards in numerous categories and divisions (bait, artificial and fly).

Looking for a fun place to take the kids? The Sheriff’s Animal Farm is open 1 – 3 p.m. Bring the family and come visit the many animals at the farm. It is free of charge, but donations are welcomed because that is how the farm is sustained. The farm is located just off of College Road, on Stock Island, at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters complex. Open house is held the second and fourth Sundays of the month.
