Ocean Life Lecture Series 2012 Presented by Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center, visitors are welcome to participate in the new Ocean Life Lecture Series; topics include Coral Spawning in the Florida Keys (March 16); Sea Turtles (April 20); Coral Reefs & Human Systems (May 18); World Oceans Day (June 8); Florida Everglades (July 20). Islamorada / March 19

The Matecumbe Historical Trust presents: Dr. John Nordt Guest speaker Dr. John Nordt shares a slide presentation on “The History of the Seminole Wars and South Florida through 19th Century Maps,” including a discussion of the Everglades and hydrology, the study of where the body of water comes from, its changes and what a unique ecology we have here in South Florida. His lecture begins with understanding how maps influence our livelihoods. Dr. Nordt spent weekends in the late ’50s and early ’60s in Islamorada. His parents owned a Red Cross house next to Warren Russell’s who was one of the original conch families. The lecture is free and open to the public, to be held at 6:30 p.m. at Island Community Church, MM 83.

30th Annual Florida Keys Watercolor Society Art Show at Marathon Community Theater Art viewings are daily from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and during the intermission of the musical “Once upon a Mattress” at Marathon Community Theater, MM 49.5. The Florida Keys Watercolor Society was founded by 10 local Keys artists in 1980 with a mission to promote art to the public, hold an annual show and conduct a workshop instructed by nationally known instructors and artists. This year’s show presents 50 pieces by artists from Key Largo to Key West.

Marathon / March 19

Florida Keys Concert Association presents: String Orchestra of New York City Established as one of the leading young ensembles in New York City with regular performances at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the conductor-less chamber ensemble of SONYC members rehearse in a collaborative effort that allows each musician to have an impact on the artistic process. The flexibility and intimacy of a string quartet are thus fused with the power and scope of an orchestra. Tickets $30, purchased at the door. Seasonal tickets available for $85 general admission and $150 preferred seating; visit website for details. Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center hosts: Sunday Free Environmental Film Series Members of the public are invited to enjoy free environmental documentaries Sundays through March 2012 at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center in Key West, co-sponsored by the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (NOAA). Studios of Key West presents: Vienna in Paradise, Classical Gala Concert World class music making in the Historic Armory Main Hall, the first time in 100 years that the Historic Armory’s Grand Hall will be used for a performance of this caliber. Key West Fishing Tournament Kick-Off Fifteen target species and $5,000 in cash prizes highlight this open-to-the-public event, heralding the beginning of more than eight months of exciting Keys fishing. Cash awards await individual participants who catch the heaviest dolphin, kingfish, cobia, blackfin tuna, mackerel, mutton snapper, wahoo, mangrove snapper and grunt, and for boat teams that score the most releases of tarpon, permit, bonefish, barracuda, marlin and sailfish. Junior anglers under age 15 can also fish. Entries in the kickoff also are eligible for the Key West Fishing Tournament, which runs through Nov. 30, 2012.

Waterfront Playhouse presents: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S! This jubilant musical is about a group of quirky prepubescent overachievers who are pitted against each other in the spelling challenge of a lifetime. They are overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. Ultimately, the nerdy and the wordy learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. Infectious songs and a laugh-out-loud script make Spelling Bee a winner!
