Keys History & Discovery Center presents: Weekly Matinee Movie Series

“Beneath the 12 Mile Reef.” In this 1953 film, some of which was shot on location in Key West, Mike Petrakis and his brother Tony (Robert Wagner) are a Greek father and son partners who dive for sponges off the coast of Florida. When they are robbed by crooks, Mike decides to take his men to the dangerous 12-mile reef to dive for more sponges. Mike suffers a fatal accident when he falls from the reef, leaving Tony to run the business. Not rated.Movie start time is 2 p.m. Free for members, non-members is $5. For an additional $6, non-members can arrive early and enjoy the museum’s many exhibits. The Discovery Center is located at MM 82, on the property of the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost.

Tiny House, Big Living Worldwide Premier Party at History of Diving Museum

The Creative Animal Troop is taking a message of sustainability on the road, literally, in a tiny house, through 2018, showcasing people that are making the world a better place and helping promote a better tomorrow. The tour launches at the History of Diving Museum, MM 83, at 7:30 p.m. Hosts Stephanie Arne from Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom and Tim Davidson, Wildlife Artist, will be kicking off the celebrations with an “Open (tiny) House.” Guests will be able to go through their 24′ x 8′ tiny home, then go inside the Museum to walk through the exhibits while enjoying appetizers and beverages.

Islamorada Women’s Sailfish Tournament

In this light-tackle challenge, awards await the grand champion team (boat), first runner-up and second runner-up team, captain and mate. Other awards are presented for the high-point angler, outstanding catch, largest tuna, dolphin and kingfish, most tagged sailfish and hard luck. Proceeds benefit the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys.

Swamp Guides Ball
All-release tournament offers fishing for bonefish, redfish and snook in the shallows of the Florida Keys and the saltwater fringes of the Everglades.

 

The Middle Keys, Marathon              

Jan. 12, 2017 – Feb. 4, 2017  Marathon Community Theater presents: The Hallelujah Girls  305-743-0994 From the authors of Golden Girls comes this hilarious and rollicking comedy of six feisty women who have taken over an abandoned church and made it into a day spa. Now, It’s the regular Friday meeting place where these women realize their time is precious and if they are going to change their lives and achieve their dreams, they have to get on it now.

Experience WWII flying history during this family friendly event. Aircraft to be in display include a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang. Walk-through tours are $15/adult, $5 children age 12 and under. Bomber Flight Experiences and Mustang Flight Training also available. Event to be held at the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport.

Marathon Branch of Monroe County Public Library presents: Free Movie Series

The February theme is “Cinematheque,” a free movie series every Wednesday night. February is Black History Month. Join us for the viewing on the large screen in the Community Room at 6 p.m., to be followed by a discussion. Free popcorn. Month’s schedule: Wed. Feb. 1, “A Raisin in the Sun”; Wed., Feb. 8, “Soul of the Game”; Wed., Feb. 15, “The Intruder”; Wed., Feb. 22, “Invictus.” The Marathon Public Library is at 3251 Overseas Highway, oceanside, Marathon.

Beatlemaniax
Enjoy an intimate evening at the Marathon Community Park, from 5-8 p.m. The Beatlemaniax capture the look and excitement of a real Beatles concert wearing the unique style clothing and “mop-top” hair and playing the same brand/model instruments the Beatles used. Performing classic Beatles songs from their touring years, 1962-1966, the arrangements have been kept as close to the original recordings as possible and all members are featured during the show. General admission is $7 or free with admission to the 23rd Annual Pigeon Key Art Festival. Kids under 12 are free. Concessions, soft drinks, beer & wine will be available for purchase. General lawn seating – blankets and chairs permitted. No pets in the park.

23rd Annual Pigeon Key Art Festival
Artists and craftspeople are to exhibit their work from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at this weekend event, located at the Marathon Community Park, MM 49, that includes live music and delicious food. Marine artist Wyland plans be on hand to create ink paintings to be auctioned live as part of the annual fundraiser. At the Festival, guests will find exhibits and displays, touch tanks, hands-on activities and even a puppet show that bring marine and wildlife education to life. Event proceeds from the event are to benefit the Pigeon Key Foundation.

Conch Republic Cup, Key West Cuba Race Week

The CRC is a historic race that started in 1997 with direct race to Varadero then expanded to Havana in 1999. The triangle race as it has been coined is a traditional race to Cuba that allows the racer to complete a triangle between KW and two Cuba cities – Varadero and Havana. The CRC is a non-profit organization with the mission to introduce as many of the US sailing community to Cuba as possible as well as revitalize racing in Cuba.

Fringe Theater presents: Hate Mail

The hilarious and offbeat ‘Hate Mail,’ written by Bill Corbett and Kira Obolensky features the very funny Pony Charvet and Susannah Wells as the love-torn duo whose fast-paced and sardonic story is at the heart (so to speak) of the show. What begins as an innocent letter of complaint soon blossoms into a full-fledged battle of wits. How could this not be a love story?!? Hate Mail takes us on a hilarious (and somewhat treacherous) journey of friendship, love, and loss. Pianist Michael Robinson provides the musical backdrop for the show, a feature unique to this particular production. Performances are at 7pm, at Little Room Jazz Club located at 821 Duval St. Tickets are $25.

The Studios of Key West presents: First Thursdays
The Studios of Key West opens its galleries to the public from 6-8 p.m., for its lively First Thursdays evening. Four unique exhibitions fill the galleries, including work by Key West watercolor artist Sean Callahan and Emmy award-winning writer Garin Wolf, porcelain figures by Cathy Rose, a selection of photographs by Charles Pearson and Timothy Roeder, plus a preview of the works to be included in this year’s Anne McKee Fine Art Auction Feb.10. The Studios of Key West is located at 533 Eaton Street.

Studios of Key West presents: Tom Rush:   Tom Rush’s shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues. Although he’s known for his live performances, Rush’s albums are also legendary; The Circle Game, according to Rolling Stone, ushered in the singer/songwriter era.
