The Upper Keys, Islamorada and Key Largo:

In Islamorada from January 20th to December 21st, The History of Diving Museum presents: Immerse Yourself! 2016 Lecture Series Celebrate the museum’s 10th anniversary by attending a free lecture series held at the museum, located at MM 82.9, every third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. Adventurers from treasure hunters to aquanauts help tell the story of mankind’s attempts to explore, understand and venture under the sea. The evening lectures are informal, informative and provide a valuable educational resource at the museum, an acclaimed facility dedicated to the collection, preservation and display of relics and artifacts related to diving and its heritage. In Key Largo from August 20th to September 23rd, The Coral Spawning Night Dives is taking place. Each year, corals spawn around the full moons of August and September. The exact spawning dates are unknown but these planned dives offer an opportunity to see this amazing spectacle of nature. Contact Amoray Dive Resort for departure times and prices. From September 20th to the 23rd, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing
Vets on the Water.  This is a group of volunteers out of Tavernier, is to host 16 wounded vets and volunteers for two days of guided fishing in Islamorada. A world class fishing experience will be provided by local captains who fish out of the World Wide Sportsman marina, Sept. 21 & 22. An open-to-the-public welcoming dinner is to be held at Islamorada Fish Company Tuesday evening as well as a departure ceremony/reception held at the marina on Friday, Sept. 23. The Conch Scramble “On the Water” Golf Tournament is scheduled for Islamorada September 24 -25. Join an on-the-water wacky weekend charity golf tournament that brings together four-person teams to enjoy a game of nine holes by boat, to “drive” biodegradable golf balls toward floating greens – without any sand traps. A live or silent auction as well as a 50/50 cash raffle also are planned. Proceeds benefit local Keys charities. Questions, Email: conchscramble@yahoo.com

Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge in Key Largo from September 23rd to 25th. This 17th annual tournament offers anglers the opportunity to win coveted trophies for trout, snook and redfish. A popular Sunday evening dinner and auction showcase is open to the public. Proceeds support local vocational scholarships for all ages, and Take Stock in Children scholarships for financially challenged Upper Keys students. Questions, Email: flkeysjen@gmail.com

From December 30th through September 21st, remember that you can enjoy “Movies Under the Stars.” Cheeca Lodge & Spa is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a weekly “Movies Under The Stars” screening every Wednesday night. Take a journey through the decades each week and enjoy a movie from each decade since the 1940’s, when Cheeca first opened in Islamorada. Snack on complimentary gourmet popcorn or grab a cocktail at the bar. Held 7:30 p.m., at Chart Room sun deck. $10 for public, free for guests. Questions, Contact: (305) 517-4505

 

The Middle Keys, Marathon

Marathon International Bonefish Tournament takes place this week. From September 22nd to 25th.  This challenge recognizes individual and team champions scoring the largest bonefish and permit, and the top anglers in fly and grand slam divisions (for the top spin or fly angler who releases the largest bonefish, permit and tarpon “slam”). Lower Keys, Big Pine and Key West

The Key West Fishing Tournament runs from April 9th to November 30th. More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). The Key West Fishing Tournament strongly encourages the release of game fish. All participating anglers receive certificates noting their catches and qualify for a variety of prizes. From September 16– October 16, the WineDine, Key West gets underway.
Cuisine connoisseurs can enjoy multicourse prix fixe meals at as many as 30 Key West restaurants during WineDine KeyWest, billed as the island’s first restaurant month. Restaurants include casual waterfront spots, trendy bistros, eateries specializing in fresh Florida Keys seafood and award-winning gourmet emporiums. Diners can register free online to take part in the month-long moveable feast.

On September 29th,  Key West Theater presents: David Cook
After winning the Idol crown in season 7, Cook went on to sell over 1 million copies of his self-titled debut album and set out on a yearlong nationwide tour in support of his multiple hit singles. Show time 8PM. Event is ages 21 and over. Questions, Contact: 305-985-0433
