Jimmy Johnson’s National Billfish Championship: Quest for the Ring Hosted by Jimmy Johnson, two-time Super Bowl winning coach and former head coach at the University of Miami, the Florida Keys Celebrity Fishing Tournament is to benefit the University’s Sports Hall of Fame, as well as other charitable foundations. Entry fee for the all-release team tournament is $5,000, and includes gift bags and tickets for all social functions for up to six team members.

Purple Isles Art Guild Annual Judged Members’ Art Show Visitors can see unique works of fine art by many of the Keys’ most talented artists as well as those by local junior and senior high school students. Works in watercolors, acrylics, oils, colored pencil, pastels, photography and three-dimensional artistry are presented. In addition to seeing the displayed work, visitors will have a chance to see and speak to an Artist in Residence. Come see art in progress, speak with our talented members and vote for your favorite work of art which will receive the coveted “People’s Choice Award.” The show will run daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the community room of the Key Largo Public Library in the Tradewinds Shopping Center, mile marker 101.4 oceanside.

Lobster Luau Beach & Pool Party Presented by the Key largo Merchants Association this fun event begins at 4 p.m. at the Bayside Inn (MM 99, bayside). The Luau features a lobster dinner, a lobster tail served with sweet corn, tropical potato salad and pineapple bread, served between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. A silent auction, DJ entertainment and live music highlight the festivities of limbo, hula hoop, tacky tourist and lobster mobster contests and more. Casual beach attire is appropriate. Proceeds are to help benefit the Good Health Clinic in Tavernier. Tickets $30 in advance, $35 at the door, and include dinner. Tickets are available at TIB (MM 100 oceanside) in Key Largo, First State Bank next to Publix in Key Largo’s Tradewinds Plaza, Key Largo Chamber of Commerce (MM 106 bayside) and Islamorada Chamber of Commerce (MM 83.2 bayside).

Marathon Community Theater presents: Once Upon a Mattress A fun-filled and family-friendly musical, this fractured fairy tale of the princess and the pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. Anyone purchasing two tickets to a play on any Thursday, other than opening night, will receive $5 off the price of the two tickets. Both tickets must be purchased and paid for in one transaction. 6th Annual Sombrero Beach Run Come for the run, but stay for the sun! A comprehensive race format includes a 15K Challenge, 10K Run and 5K Walk/Run; start time for 10K is at 8 a.m. at Sombrero Beach. Runners from all over the Keys, country and world participate in this weekend-long event. Race entry fee includes t-shirts. Music, Awards, Raffles, Food and Entertainment. Male and female winner of 15K receive $500. Organized by Southernmost Runners Club.

14th Annual Captain Leon Shell Memorial Sailfish Tournament The 14th annual tournament offers two full days of sailfishing and a $25,000 cash purse. The winning boat team is to receive a grand prize of $20,000 cash (with 20 registered boats), and cash prizes to first and second runners-up. Trophies are to be awarded to the top boat teams and individual sailfish anglers. Proceeds benefit Hospice of the Florida Keys.

“Paradise Creations,” A Big Annual Arts & Crafts Show One of Marathon’s highly anticipated original-art events takes place inside San Pablo Hall (MM 53 ocean) on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nearly 25 local artisans are to display originally created artwork and handmade items for purchase. A unique Keys event for art lovers and craft connoisseurs to enjoy — other highlights include homemade food catered by Laurie’s Deli and raffles. Weekend event is open to the public, free admission.

Jessica Wilson Jewelry at Frangipani Gallery Frangipani Gallery will feature the work of Precious Metal Clay jewelry artist Jessica Wilson during this month’s First Friday Art Stroll on Upper Duval. Meet Jessica and see her latest creations at an artists’ reception at Frangipani Gallery, 1102A Duval St., from 6-9 p.m. Wilson works with a relatively new material from reclaimed silver, Precious Metal Clay (PMC), a malleable form of fine silver that she sculpts and forms into her intriguing and original designs.

50th Annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest An Old Island Days tradition, this unique contest features novel sounds produced by contestants in several age categories as they attempt to make “music” on fluted conch shells. Contest located in the garden of the Oldest House, 322 Duval Street, free and open to all ages.
