REEF presents: Intro to Basic Fish ID Seminar

Free and open to the public, from 7pm to 9pm. Fish ID class is to prepare REEF volunteers to complete fish surveys for the Great Annual Fish Count dive day event (July 26), as well as become a year-round volunteer. Located at REEF Headquarters, in the median at 98300 Overseas Highway, MM 98.3.

Key Largo / July 26

July’s Great Annual Fish Count Dive Day

 Volunteer divers and snorkelers can help identify and document fish diversity and population trends in marine ecosystems. The GAFC serves to introduce and inspire recreational divers and snorkelers to participate in REEF’s year-round Volunteer Survey Project, and raise awareness among both the diving community and general public about marine habitats and trends in fish populations. Boats depart at 8 a.m. from Ocean Divers; participants in fish surveys can receive special savings.

Islamorada / July 27 – 28

2014 IFC RedGhost Stalk

 

Staged by the Islamorada Fishing Club, the 2014 RedGhost Stalk is an all-release tournament for young adult anglers (ages 17-25) and junior anglers (ages 9-16) that focuses on catch-and-release fishing for redfish and bonefish on fly, spin or bait. The event is a fundraiser for the Islamorada Fishing and Conservation Trust.

Key West Art & Historical Society presents: Key West or Bust, A History of Tourism

 The Florida Keys have historically been an alluring travel destination for travelers around the world. With the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s, tourism in Key West was the lynchpin in warding off bankruptcy. This exhibit explores the history of tourism in the Florida Keys from the 1920s until the 1980s while focusing specifically on transportation, accommodation, travel brochures and postcards. Custom House Museum is located at 281 Front Street, and open daily 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Custom House Museum presents: Florida Keys or Bust! A History of Tourism

 For longer than a decade, Will Fernandez has been one of Key West’s most enchanting artists. He paints and sculpts almost entirely from memory and makes his works quite humorous and whimsical. In this exhibition, he displays a number of his impressionistic-style paintings, as well as a selection of his distinctive sculptures in stone, wood, clay and more. Custom House Museum is located at 281 Front Street, and open daily 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Key West Fishing Tournament

More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). The Key West Fishing Tournament strongly encourages the release of game fish. All participating anglers receive certificates noting their catches and qualify for a variety of prizes.

6th Annual Key West Art Garden

The cost of admission to the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden brings visitors an added value and wealth of beauty with 19 sculptures, each made of recycled materials, and some interactive, placed throughout the garden from local contemporary artists. Garden is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Visit the Family-Friendly Sheriff’s Animal Farm

 

Bring the family and come visit the animals at the farm, including horses, a steer, pigs, goats, sheep, bunnies, alligators, tropical birds, kinkajous, Sloths, a Lemur, Kramer the Emu, a family of Patagonian Cavys, tortoises and turtles, snakes and many more. It is free of charge and donations are appreciated. The farm is located just off of College Road, on Stock Island, at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters complex.

Red Barn Theatre presents: Key West Summer Stage “The Whale”

 

This is the story of a 650 pound, grief-stricken, guilt-racked man seeking reconciliation with his estranged daughter. At times hilarious, and others heart-breaking, the play stars one of Key West’s comic gems, Chad Newman, in a rare but riveting dramatic performance, supported by Melody Moore, Quincy Perkins, Julia Tetreault, and Tammy Shanley. Winner of the Lortel, Obie, and Drama Desk Awards last year.
