The world’s top fly-rod anglers endure a five-day test of patience and finesse, fishing Keys waters using fly tackle and either a 12- or 16-pound tippet. Named for the late fly fisherman and conservationist Don Hawley, the tournament benefits the Guides Trust Foundation, assisting professional fishing guides and supporting backcountry fishery conservation programs.

Islamorada / June 6 – 7
Florida Keys Elks Lodge located in Tavernier presents this event. Lady and junior anglers seeking summer fun, competition and camaraderie can join in this second annual tournament that benefits Florida Keys Elks Lodge charities. Up to six anglers can register per boat. Headquartered at the Florida Keys Elks Lodge, mile marker 92.5 bayside, the tournament kicks off at the lodge with a free, family fun day starting at noon. Educational and entertaining events for junior anglers are to include casting contests, fishing seminars, tackle and bait rigging as well as a bounce house for youngsters. Events are open to the public and continue until 7 p.m. Register online; savings for early bird registrants by May 10, and May 31.

Key West / March 1 – June 30
Emerging local artist and graphic designer Marky Pierson is to exhibit new paintings and designs focusing on three distinct categories: ‘Conch Night’ Series featuring the Hemingway House, Custom House and Curry Mansion; ‘Squishy Femme’ Series explores soft, squishy and everything womanly; ‘Graphic Design’ Series features graphic posters of iconic Key West images and large format paintings inspired by vintage tourism posters. Custom House Museum is located at 281 Front Street, and open daily 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Key West / April 6 – November 30
More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). The Key West Fishing Tournament strongly encourages the release of game fish. All participating anglers receive certificates noting their catches and qualify for a variety of prizes.

Key West / April 15 – July 31
The cost of admission to the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden brings visitors an added value and wealth of beauty with 19 sculptures, each made of recycled materials, and some interactive, placed throughout the garden from local contemporary artists. Garden is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

For longer than a decade, Will Fernandez has been one of Key West’s most enchanting artists. He paints and sculpts almost entirely from memory and makes his works quite humorous and whimsical. In this exhibition, he displays a number of his impressionistic-style paintings, as well as a selection of his distinctive sculptures in stone, wood, clay and more. Custom House Museum is located at 281 Front Street, and open daily 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Key West / June 7
VFW Fishing Tournament
This family oriented tournament offers cash prizes for dolphin, wahoo, snapper and grouper, along with prizes for heaviest fish by a lady angler and heaviest fish by a juvenile angler. Heaviest Dolphin is worth $2,500. The entry fee is $200 per boat and includes four tournament t-shirts, four tickets to the Captain’s meeting, four tickets to the awards barbeque and chances to win door prizes. All proceeds benefit disabled and/or needy veterans in Monroe County. Hosted by VFW Post 3911 and Key West Harbor Yacht Club. Live streaming video of the Florida Keys underwater world is to come to you from Sand Key, 8.5 miles off Key West, 20 feet below the surface! From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., viewers can tune in for a virtual undersea experience, or to make a pledge to Mother Ocean.
