Now that we’ve welcomed in the New Year, the Keys are the place to be! This week’s happenings include a sailfish challenge, art, theater, and a visit with Governor Bob Graham. See a sampling of this week’s special activities below:
The Upper Keys:

16th Annual Key Largo Sailfish Challenge -Key Largo, January 06 to January 08
Heralding the height of sailfish season, each year this boat tournament as part of the acclaimed Redbone@Large series is characterized by friendly but serious competition, professionalism and camaraderie among anglers who put their 20-pound test line skills to task. Up to four anglers per boat can register for the event, hosted at Sundowners, MM 104 bayside. Cash prizes and trophies await the first- through third-place teams. Entry fee for the first angler is $525, each additional angler is $475, and the fourth angler is no charge. Auctions and raffles are to highlight the event, whose proceeds benefit the Coral Shores High School band program.

Marathon Community Theater presents: The Dixie Swim Club , Marathon, January 05 to January 28
-Five southern women, all friends since their college swim team days, gather every year for a long weekend, sans husbands or kids. This comedy follows the directions their lives takes them, and that true friendship lasts forever. Performances are Thurs – Sat evenings, at 8 p.m. Anyone purchasing two tickets to a play on any Thursday, other than opening night, will receive $5 off the price of the two tickets. Artists in Paradise Gallery presents: VaEtta Baldwin- Big Pine & the Lower Keys / January 01 to January 15
VeEtta Baldwin is the new window showcase artist, displaying her “Art in the Square” work in the front window of the Artists in Paradise Gallery in the Winn Dixie Plaza on Big Pine Key. There will be watercolors and scratch art on clayboard. More of VeEtta’s artwork is displayed on two separate walls inside the gallery which is open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Stop in to browse several artwork pieces from Florida Keys artists.

Harry S. Truman Little White House presents: Governor Bob Graham- Key West, January 7,
The Governor who saved the Little White House, Bob Graham, will be speaking for the first time on the lawn of the Little White House. The presentation, hosted by the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation, will begin at 4 PM. Bob and Adele Graham will host a cocktail party afterwards inside the Little White House to raise money for the Foundation. Tickets are available for the presentation and the cocktail party. Tickets available at keystix.com.
