Those succulent claws, brought to shore fresh daily from the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, will drip with drawn butter and mustard sauce on the chins of hungry locals and visitors. Florida Keys History & Discovery Center presents: Clyde Butcher

 

Renowned landscape photographer and environmentalist Clyde Butcher will showcase the natural beauty of Cuba in images of the island’s most remote and mountainous island locations during a traveling exhibit at the Keys History & Discovery Center, located at the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost, at MM 82. Butcher is best known for his evocative black and white photographs of Florida wetlands. The exhibit also will include images from Butcher’s Florida Keys photography collection. The museum opens Thursdays through Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. General admission is $12.

Purple Isles Art Guild Annual Judged Members’ Art Show

Visitors can see unique works of fine art by many of the Keys’ most talented artists as well as those by local junior and senior high school students. Works in watercolors, acrylics, oils, colored pencil, pastels, photography and three-dimensional artistry are presented. In addition to seeing the displayed work, visitors will have a chance to see and speak to an Artist in Residence. Come see art in progress, speak with our talented members and vote for your favorite work of art which will receive the coveted “People’s Choice Award.” The show will run daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the community room of the Key Largo Public Library in the Tradewinds Shopping Center, mile marker 101.4 oceanside.

35th Annual Garden Walk 2014

 

The Garden Walk is a unique, self-guided tour showcasing properties in the Upper Keys presented by the Garden Club of the Upper Keys. Several fabulous private tropical gardens, each with its own personality and charm, are open only for the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stroll among the lush landscaping, remarkable native trees, and tropical flowers that flourish in the gardens. Meander through the Francis Tracy Garden Center gardens to the sound of musicians, while enjoying complimentary beverages, unique vendors, art show, plant sale and more. Tickets are available for a $25 donation and may be obtained in advance at ticket outlets in the Upper Keys or on the day of the Walk at the Francis Tracy Garden Center MM94.

Key Largo / March 1

Florida Keys Bicycle Poker Run

 

The Run begins at mile marker (MM) 94.5 in Key Largo and takes cyclists through beautiful Upper Keys neighborhoods along a designated route. Riders receive a poker card at each of five stops, with extra fun and games for prizes. At the fifth and last station, at MM 84.8, Coconut Cove Resort, there is to be a cookout and prizes for the best “hands” of poker. Bike rentals available at Backcountry Cowboy Outfitters, call 305-517-4177 to reserve one. Admission is $35, students $20, children 12 and under free. Presented by the Florida Keys Gator Club, whose scholarship fund assists local young men and women who will be attending the University of Florida.

8th Annual Sombrero Beach Run

Attracted by a weekend filled with sunshine and athletic fun, more than 700 racing circuit runners are expected to join the eighth annual event. Co-sponsored by the Southernmost Runners Club, the 2014 weekend workout begins Friday, March 1, with a 5-6:30 p.m. registration kick-off party. Stocked with food, drinks, music and entertainment, the event is to be staged at Sombrero Beach at the end of Sombrero Beach Road, mile marker 50. Awards are to be given to the overall male and female winners, and second-place overall finishers in the 10k run, 5k run and 5k walk. Awards include Keys resort stays, cash and experiences with local eco-attractions and watersports. An awards ceremony on the beach follows the race with a barbecue, drinks, music and warm sunshine.

National Pig Days

 

National Pig Days is a three-day BBQ, pig roast, music fest, silent auction and social extravaganza for locals and visitors alike. The main attraction are the wildly exciting royal racing pigs cheered on by howling spectators. Children’s games, beverage tents and evening shows round out what has become a major annual event and fundraiser for a local charity.

38th Annual Marathon House & Garden Tour, and Art Show Weekend

Tour beautiful homes and extraordinary gardens in the Marathon area that reflect Keys living. Each home is to be adorned with floral arrangements created by Marathon Garden Club members. Other attractions include an art show at the club, MM 50 bayside. Garden Club is located at mile marker (MM) 50, bayside. To mark the 30-year anniversary of his death, the Custom House is exhibit a number of Williams’ paintings revealing a different facet of his life and his talents. Taking inspiration from the famous Cole Porter musical, the Custom House will display a wide array of knickknacks, curios, ornaments, trinkets, baubles, tchotchkes and artwork owned by members of the local community. Their unique and quirky collections will be showcased alongside a narrative from the owners. Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center presents: Art Exhibition

 

Tropical Botanic Artists are the creative force behind “Botanical Exploration in the Everglades: Braving One of North America’s Last Frontiers,” and the exhibit is to be displayed at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center, 33 E. Quay Rd., Key West, during open hours Tues – Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Sunday & Monday). Admission to the exhibit is free and open to the public. The special exhibition features 28 original portraits of plants discovered in the Everglades by botanists in the 19th and 20th centuries, and given common and scientific names that reflect the identities of those intrepid plant explorers. The show includes graphite drawings of lichens that were discovered and named quite recently, and informational panels about botanical exploration, field collecting, how plants are named, and ways Everglades plants were and still are used by native peoples.

Happy Birthday Tennessee Williams!

 

The Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit (315 Truman Ave., off Duval St.), in cooperation with the Tropic Cinema, Key West Art and Historical Society, and Artist William Welch are celebrating the 103rd birthday of Tennessee Williams during the month of March. Events planned include a series of four classic movies adapted from Tennessee Williams’ award winning plays being shown at the Tropic, a Poetry Contest, an Artist Challenge, two receptions and an exhibit of original paintings by Tennessee Williams at the Custom House. Wednesday, March 26, a reception honoring the 103rd birthday of Tennessee Williams and his life in Key West is to be held at the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Poetry Contest winners will be announced and read their poems; an exhibit of the paintings done during the Artists’ Challenge are to be displayed; and birthday cake, wine and other light refreshments. A suggested donation of $10 from attendees is appreciated.

Emerging local artist and graphic designer Marky Pierson is to exhibit new paintings and designs focusing on three distinct categories: ‘Conch Night’ Series featuring the Hemingway House, Custom House and Curry Mansion; ‘Squishy Femme’ Series explores soft, squishy and everything womanly; ‘Graphic Design’ Series features graphic posters of iconic Key West images and large format paintings inspired by vintage tourism posters. Fourth Annual Conchfest 2014 – A Celebration of Conch Heritage

At Bayview Park in Historic Old Town Key West from 11 a.m to 10 p.m., vendors are to be selling arts and crafts of every imaginable kind among other treasures. A host of activities are planned for native Conchs, Freshwater Conchs, Non-Conchs, and Conch Wanna-be’s. Sample foods for sale including conch fritters, conch salad, pork, and other more traditional fare. There will be childrens’ activities, entertainment and much more. Free admission
