Those succulent claws, brought to shore fresh daily from the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, will drip with drawn butter and mustard sauce on the chins of hungry locals and visitors. A series of food festivals during the season celebrate the sustainable seafood resource throughout the Keys.

Islamorada / January 8 – 9

The Islamorada SailFly Championship

In this 14th annual fly fishing, all-release boat team tournament, captains, mates or anglers can tease, but only the registered anglers can cast, hook and play the fish. The invitational challenge is limited to 20 teams; teams use 16 pound class (8kg) tippet supplied by the tournament. All tackle, casting and fishing must comply with the tournament and I.G.F.A rules. It is a boat team event with no more than two anglers per boat. Captains, Mates or Anglers may tease, but only the registered anglers may cast, hook and play the fish.

Don Gurgiolo Sailfish Classic

This all-release tournament, part of the Redbone at Large series, honors one of Islamorada’s great captains, Don Gurgiolo, a pioneer of contemporary offshore light tackle and live ballyhoo fishing techniques who fished for 50 years while operating the Gonfishin’ charter boats. The well-liked skipper’s legacy continues. Up to four anglers can fish per boat.

Brew on the Bay

Presented by the Rotary Club of Key Largo, this craft beer festival features a “home brew competition,” along with a main event with more than 80 craft beers from around the world featured in an unlimited tasting with food, music and entertainment along the waterfront.

The Florida Keys Celtic Festival

Staged at the Marathon Community Park, MM49, the festival features six outstanding Celtic bands, including Scottish headliner Albannach, international super group Rathkeltair, Marcille Wallis & Friends with the Tampa Bay Treblemaker Dancers, West of Galway and a special 20th reunion appearance of Celtic rock pioneers Clan na Gael. St. Andrew’s Pipe Band of Miami is to fill the air with the sounds of bagpipes and drums; athletics and Border Collie sheep herding demonstrations along with a Children’s Glen round out the entertainment. Celtic merchandise vendors, Celtic & local food fare and beverages provide an authentic menu to please the palate. Foliage and Flora at Frangipani Gallery

“Foliage and Flora” is a show of new work by jewelry artist Jessica Wilson and acrylic painter Fran Decker. Wilson works with a relatively new material from reclaimed silver, Precious Metal Clay (PMC). Her latest work is inspired by jungle leaves and the smell of night air hanging heavy with the scents of flower blossoms. Fran’s new paintings this year explored the flora and fauna of the Keys. Meet the artists at a reception on Friday, Jan. 3rd, 6-9 p.m., at 1102A Duval as part of the Upper Duval Art Stroll. The show can be seen until February 5.
