In the summer of 1993, the first REEF fish surveys were conducted by a group of pioneering volunteers. Twenty years later, REEF’s Volunteer Survey Project and other REEF initiatives are leading the way as innovative and effective marine conservation programs. To celebrate, REEF will be hosting 4 days of diving, learning and parties. Highlights include diving oportunities each day, as well as seminar offerings such as Intro and Advanced Fish ID, Lionfish Collection, Artificial Reefs in the Keys, Grouper Moon and special talks given by REEF Co-Founders Paul Humann and Ned DeLoach. An open house at REEF HQ is also planned, with a celebration banquet on Saturday night. The Middle Keys:

Lucky Street Gallery presents: Gridlock Exhibition

Lucky Street is filled with paintings, wall sculptures, and photos displayed in a grid format throughout the gallery, inviting viewers to easily compare various works by artists to decide on a favorite. Take the time to explore the grids by a fabulous group of local artists. The ?Gridlock? Exhibition will be on display from Aug. 1 – 30, with Gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at 540 Greene Street. Lucky Street will be closed for the month of September, and will reopen October 1, 2013.

Key West Lobsterfest

Events include a Thursday night lobster boil, Friday night Duval Crawl, Saturday street fair with lobster-inspired culinary creations and a free concert, and a luscious lobster brunch Sunday. The festive feast celebrates the start of the Florida Keys lobster season.

Captain Tony Days

Captain Tony Tarracino, was an American icon, saloonkeeper, boat captain, gambler and Mayor of Key West. He has been called arguably the city’s most beloved resident. Reporters sought him out, movies were made about his life, and Jimmy Buffett sang about him in “Last Mango In Paris.” This festival is a celebration of Tony’s life, featuring trivia events, live music and an exclusive viewing of “Captain Tony Years,” the movie. Don’t miss this incredible documentary of Captain Tony as seen through his eyes.

Florida Keys Maritime Heritage Symposium: Florida Keys 500

This year’s symposium, entitled Florida Keys 500, will focus on that Spanish colonial period in the Florida Keys. Experts from across South Florida will share their research on topics that include Native American lifestyles, the 1622 Fleet of sunken treasure ships, the stories behind the names of the individual keys, and the search and discovery of slave ships. A historical Spanish Map exhibit will also be on display. Guest speakers include Michelle Williams (Florida Public Archaeology Network), Ray Blazevic (local history explorer), Corey Malcom (Mel Fisher Maritime Museum), and Jim Clupper (Florida Keys historian). The symposium concludes with a showing of WPBT’s “Sunken Stories” which features the underwater archeological work of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. To be located at the Westin Resort located at 245 Front Street. Doors open at 9 a.m. with presentations scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lecture series is free and open to the public.
