How long does it take to look at a piece of art? Studies have found that people devote as little as eight seconds to each work in a gallery. Gallery goers across the world will be invited to slow down. A lot. Murray E. Nelson Government Center will join museums, galleries and art houses around the world as Slow Art Day challenges you to spend five, 10 or even 15 minutes in front of a single piece of artwork. By engaging with a painting, sculpture or installation over a longer period of time, you might gain a deeper understanding and connection to the piece. The “555@5” art exhibit encourages participates to experience looking slowly at 5 artworks, 5 minutes of observation, followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Florida Keys artists and representatives participating in 555@5 are John David Hawver, Wendy Cahill, Nance Frank, Dan Lawler and Carmen Sotolongo Kelley. Appetizers and cocktails are to be available.
