Stone Crab Season

Those succulent claws, brought to shore fresh daily from the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, will drip with mustard dip on the chins of hungry locals and visitors. A series of food festivals during the season celebrate the sustainable seafood resource throughout the Keys.

Second Annual Brew on the Bay

Presented by the Rotary Club of Key Largo, this craft beer festival features a “home brew competition,” along with a main event with more than 80 craft beers from around the world featured in an unlimited tasting with food, music and entertainment along the waterfront. A Sunday “Hangover Brunch” pairs a special menu showcased by a select craft beer. Ticket prices are $75 VIP (includes Friday and Saturday), General Admission $35 in advance, $45 at the gate (Saturday’s main event); $30 each or $50 per couple for Sunday’s Hangover Brunch (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Tickets available Feb. 15 online at keylargorotary.org.

Native Plant Day: An Earth Day Event

Sponsored by Key Largo’s Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Nursery volunteers from Dagny Johnson park are to share insights into the importance of native plants, how to propagate and care for native plants and how to plant butterfly gardens. Organizations including the Florida Native Plant Society, Izaak Walton League, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, National Park Service and Reef Environmental Education Foundation are to set up informational booths. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  31st Annual Judged Florida Keys Watercolor Society Art Show

The Florida Keys Watercolor Society was founded by 10 local Keys artists in 1980 with a mission to promote art to the public, hold an annual show and conduct a workshop instructed by nationally known instructors and artists. Showcasing colorful, luminous watercolors, the show presents original pieces by artists from Key Largo to Key West. Prints are also available for purchase. Visit this event to view the collection and vote for your favorite. As a gesture of “Artists Helping the Arts”, a percentage of all sales benefits the MCT. Located in the main gallery of the Marathon Community Theater (MM 49.5) during the production of “The Sound of Music,” viewing is offered Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. or 7-9:30 p.m. Art Show viewing is also available during intermission on performance days – Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Connections Project – A Mosaic of the Keys

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts invites the public to the Royal Furniture store, located at Searstown Shopping Center from 6-8 p.m. for an exhibition and opening reception for its community mosaic project, involving more than 300 6″ x 6″ small works of art by local artists and community members of all skill levels and various mediums. The completed mosaic, reflecting the ideas, beauty and creativity of our paradise community, will be on display in the lobby of the Royal Furniture store, through April 2. The public is also invited to purchase a piece of the mosaic in an innovative process called “blind buy”. $30 will buy one completed canvas and shipping to the purchaser, once the entire mosaic has been on display in all the six Keys’ locations. The purchaser will not know which piece of art they will receive until it arrives in their mailbox mid-April. Each work will be accompanied by an artist’s statement that will provide insight into the origin of the work and the artist’s thoughts and inspiration.

New in 2013, this four-day challenge offers a $50,000 first place prize, $15,000 and $10,000 to second- and third-place anglers, respectively. Early entry fee per angler is $1800. After March 1, 2013, entry fee is $2500.

Waterfront Playhouse presents: Typhoon Judy

 As Typhoon Viola swirls around Hong Kong, Judy Garland lies comatose in a hospital from a suicide attempt. In a hallucination, Typhoon Judy enters a desolate rehearsal hall with a lone piano player and begins to tell tales of her life with comedy, anecdotes and, of course, song. Key West Fishing Tournament Kick-Off

Fifteen target species and $5,000 in cash prizes highlight this open-to-the-public event, heralding the beginning of more than eight months of exciting Keys fishing. Cash awards await individual participants who catch the heaviest dolphin, kingfish, cobia, blackfin tuna, mackerel, mutton snapper, wahoo, mangrove snapper and grunt, and for boat teams that score the most releases of tarpon, permit, bonefish, barracuda, marlin and sailfish. Junior anglers under age 15 can also fish. Entries in the kickoff also are eligible for the Key West Fishing Tournament, which runs through Nov. 30, 2013.

Key West Fishing Tournament

More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In an April kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.

17th Annual Earth Day 5K Run/Walk

Celebrate the planet by getting outdoors for the 5K Run/Walk to be held at McCoy Indigenous Park, Atlantic and White Streets. Participants 14 years and over pay a $15 Registration and $20 on Race Day; Participants 13 years and under pay $10 Registration and $15 on Race Day. Tee shirts are given to first 100 participants. Earth-friendly recyclable awards are to be given: 5K Run — Top Overall Male & Female; Top Masters Male & Female; 1st & 2nd Place Each Age Group.

Cemetery Stroll of the Historic Key West Cemetery

Join knowledgeable guides who will take strollers on an information filled tour of ten sites within the 19-acre grounds. These guided tours will provide interested insights to the history of our city and its people. The event is a collaboration of the City of Key West and the Florida Keys Historic Foundation. The tours begin at 9:30 and 10:00 and are expected to last 90 minutes. A $10.00 donation to the Historic Florida Keys Foundation would be appreciated. Call to register.
