Those succulent claws, brought to shore fresh daily from the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, will drip with mustard dip on the chins of hungry locals and visitors. A series of food festivals during the season celebrate the sustainable seafood resource throughout the Keys.

Islamorada / December 31
Revelers in the sport-fishing capital of Islamorada can welcome 2013 with the midnight “drop” of a glittering 7.5-foot replica sailfish at Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina at Holiday Isle, mile marker (MM) 84 oceanside. Free and open to the public, the event features live music from Anchor Atlantic on the property’s Atlantic Ocean beach and a big-screen television showing New York’s Times Square festivities as well as the “sailfish drop” from the sixth floor of the Tower Building.

Live holiday music, games for the kids, holiday cheer and a chance for photos with Santa highlight this event along the historic harbor walk linking colorful seaport restaurants, bars and businesses at the Key West Bight. Created as a gift to the community, the gala is produced by the Key West Bight Preservation Association and tenants of the Key West Bight.
Key West / December 1 – March 23
This stunning art exhibit showcases the work of leading contemporary sculptors at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and the Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower. Twenty-three contemporary sculptures and two performances are planned to enhance the land and seascapes around two historic Civil War-era forts. Among the projected highlights of the 2012/2013 exhibition are a steel and wood skeletal structure that is part animal, ship, airplane and sleigh, a massive monumental concrete relic of a shell from a world unknown, a mysterious array of manhole covers that seem to melt in the sun and the long awaited Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Unicycle Tour! “The 39 Steps,” Broadway’s longest running comedy, is a giddy display of theatrical invention, in which 4 actors create over 150 characters to portray Hitchcock’s cinematic masterpiece. Winner of the Tony, Olivier and Drama Desk “Best Play” Awards. Showtime 8 p.m.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary invites the public to enjoy free environmentally-themed documentary films every Sunday through March 31, 2013 at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center in Key West. Each Sunday, doors to the center will open at 1 p.m. and sanctuary staff will show documentaries at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the center’s theater. These award-winning documentaries address environmental topics including climate change, marine debris, energy efficiency and resource protection. Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is located at 35 East Quay Road, on the Truman Waterfront next to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park Today’s topics: 2 p.m. “How Smart are Animals” (PBS, 53 minutes) and 4 p.m. “Hot Planet – Cold Comfort” (PBS, 25 minutes)

Frost-free Key West isn’t a winter wonderland during the holiday season, but it may become a “wiener wonderland” when about 200 dachshunds and their owners take a New Year’s Eve stroll through the island’s picturesque downtown. The annual Key West Dachshund Walk, set for noon Monday, Dec. 31, provides an informal, family-friendly prelude to nighttime New Year’s Eve revelry. Spectators can watch the fun and meet the canine participants on Fleming Street between Whitehead and Duval streets.

Key West New Year’s Eve Celebrations
The Southernmost City celebrates with a conch shell drop at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval St.; a descending 6-foot red high heel shoe carrying drag queen Sushi at the Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House complex, 724 Duval St.; and a pirate wench descending from a tall ship mast in the island city’s Historic Seaport.
