Stone Crab Season

Those succulent claws, brought to shore fresh daily from the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, will drip with mustard dip on the chins of hungry locals and visitors. A series of food festivals during the season celebrate the sustainable seafood resource throughout the Keys.

History of Diving Museum presents: The Art of Diving

 

The History of Diving Museum continues its 2012 Immerse Yourself! series with a free special event: The Art of Diving: Artists Making Art Inspired by Diving, presented by Islamorada artist, BJ Royster. Royster is to share her artwork and speak about overcoming her fear of the ocean after several near-drowning experiences in her youth. Diving has since become the primary inspiration for her art and she draws on the dramatic scenery of the world beneath the waves to create unique and compelling seascapes. She will also speak about the Ocean Artists Society and her recent collaboration with the renowned marine artist, Wyland. Starts at 7 p.m. at Diving Museum, mile marker 83 in Islamorada. Immerse yourself in the creative fun!

Morada Way Arts & Cultural District presents: Third Thursday Art Walk

Showcasing the fine arts, music and culinary nuances of the Purple Isles, the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District features national and local artisans who are showcased in galleries at Morada Way between mile marker 81 and 82 – formerly named Industrial Road – as well as “culinary art” and live music from 6-10 p.m. In addition to individual artists, participating galleries include the Redbone Gallery, Gallery Morada, Pasta Pantaleo Signature Gallery, Bluewater Potters and more. Free admission. Art Walk is held the third Thursday of each month.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks on Blackwater Sound

The back bay is the setting for the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks extravaganza hosted by Sundowners, Senor Frijoles, Cactus Jacks, Gus’ Grille at the Marriott Key Largo Beach Resort and the Caribbean Club, MM 103-104. Check website for details.

New Year’s Eve Celebration at Postcard Inn

Revelers in the sport-fishing capital of Islamorada can welcome 2013 with the midnight “drop” of a glittering 7.5-foot replica sailfish at Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina at Holiday Isle, mile marker (MM) 84 oceanside. Free and open to the public, the event features live music from Anchor Atlantic on the property’s Atlantic Ocean beach and a big-screen television showing New York’s Times Square festivities as well as the “sailfish drop” from the sixth floor of the Tower Building.

Created as a gift to the community, the gala is produced by the Key West Bight Preservation Association and tenants of the Key West Bight.

17th Annual Sculpture Key West

This stunning art exhibit showcases the work of leading contemporary sculptors at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and the Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower. Twenty-three contemporary sculptures and two performances are planned to enhance the land and seascapes around two historic Civil War-era forts. Among the projected highlights of the 2012/2013 exhibition are a steel and wood skeletal structure that is part animal, ship, airplane and sleigh, a massive monumental concrete relic of a shell from a world unknown, a mysterious array of manhole covers that seem to melt in the sun and the long awaited Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Unicycle Tour! Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary invites the public to enjoy free environmentally-themed documentary films every Sunday through March 31, 2013 at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center in Key West. Each Sunday, doors to the center will open at 1 p.m. and sanctuary staff will show documentaries at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the center’s theater. These award-winning documentaries address environmental topics including climate change, marine debris, energy efficiency and resource protection. Key West Dachshund Walk

Frost-free Key West isn’t a winter wonderland during the holiday season, but it may become a “wiener wonderland” when about 200 dachshunds and their owners take a New Year’s Eve stroll through the island’s picturesque downtown. The annual Key West Dachshund Walk, set for noon Monday, Dec. 31, provides an informal, family-friendly prelude to nighttime New Year’s Eve revelry. Spectators can watch the fun and meet the canine participants on Fleming Street between Whitehead and Duval streets.

Key West New Year’s Eve Celebrations

The Southernmost City celebrates with a conch shell drop at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval St.; a descending 6-foot red high heel shoe carrying drag queen Sushi at the Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House complex, 724 Duval St.; and a pirate wench descending from a tall ship mast in the island city’s Historic Seaport.
