Islamorada / October 8 – 10

Bonefishing World Championship/ Islamorada All-Tackle Bonefish

Slots remain, and organizers are excited for energized newcomers to face seasoned veterans. Dubbed the “Fall All-Tackle,” the three-day annual challenge is limited to 25 participants. One angler per boat pairs with a licensed captain to vie for division winners’ trophies.

Key Largo / October 9

REEF, Fish & Friends

Alejandro Acosta, Ph.D., is to share information about fisheries and independent reef fish sampling in the Florida Keys. Acosta is an Associate Research Scientist with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Learn about FWC’s methods for assessing reef fish abundance and size structure and their approach to identify, monitor and sample reef fish spawning aggregation. Located at the James E. Lockwood REEF headquarters, MM 98.30 in the median, Key Largo. Social at 6:30 p.m., one-hour informal presentation at 7 p.m.

Ocean Life Series: Aquarius 2013 and Beyond

Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center presents Mark Patterson, a professor of marine science at the College of William and Mary’s Virginia Institue of Marine Science. Dr. Patterson has used the Aquarius Reef Base to conduct his research since 1984. He will present the new business model for the Aquarius, and the future of human habitation of the sea floor. The event is free and open to the public; begins at 6:00 p.m. with a meet and greet with the speaker, followed by a lecture at 7:00 p.m.

Gay Key West Trolley Tour

Enjoy a fabulous tour of Key West…with a twist. A gay twist that is! Get a unique tour of Key West and learn about our colorful history that includes the famous and the infamous. Departs from the City Hall Parking Lot, located on the corner of Angela and Simonton. Tickets $25. Can be purchased ONLINE or at the trolley, our G&L Visitor Center (located at 513 Truman), and many of our distinguished gay and lesbian guest houses.


Key West / March 17 – November 30

Key West Fishing Tournament

More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In a March kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.
