FREE Admission to Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks – National Public Lands Day

Visitors planning a special end-of-summer trip can explore Everglades National Park and Dry Tortugas National Park free, in honor of National Public Lands Day. Entrance fees at the two parks will be waived Saturday.

Triple Crown of Key Largo Paddleboard Series

A sanctioned event by the World Paddle Association, this three-race stand up paddle board series is to be held September 15,16 and 30. Prizes are to be awarded the overall series winner and prizes to each individual race winner. For more information and course maps, visit website for details.

Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge

The annual challenge requires anglers fish for trout and redfish. Proceeds benefit both local Rotary scholarships and Take Stock in Children, a statewide scholarship program for children in seventh through 12th grades. Entry fee is $125 per angler, $70 for young anglers (kids and juniors are combined).

Key West Fishing Tournament

More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In a March kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.

Guided Birding & Garden Tours at Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden

In partnership with the Florida Keys Audubon Society and the Wildlife Refuge Center this event celebrates the the 14th Annual Florida Keys Birding & Wildlife Festival with two guided birding and garden tours, Sept. 28 & 29 at 10 a.m.; Sept. 29, a butterfly tour given by the Miami Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association at 2 p.m.; Wine & Cheese Social followed by a presentation, Capturing Birds and Wildlife “Through the Lens,” by award winning nature photographers Dick Fortune and Sara Lopez at 5:30 p.m. Call to register.

Smithsonian Magazine’s 8th Annual Museum Day

The Key West Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters Museum, Fort East Martello, Harry S.
