REEF, Fish & Friends

Thomas Potts, Director of NOAA’s Aquarius Reef Base, is to share a 20-year perspective on, and the future of this historic program, a mainstay in undersea research. Located at the James E. Lockwood REEF headquarters, MM 98.30 in the median, Key Largo. Social at 6:30 p.m., one-hour informal presentation at 7 p.m.

History of Diving Museum presents: FREE Seminar Series

 

The History of Diving Museum continues its 2012 Immerse Yourself! series with a free special event: “Art McKee and the Treasure Divers” presented by Musuem Founder, Dr. Sally Bauer. Who was “Silver Bar McKee” and why was he called the Father of Modern Treasure Diving? Dr. Sally Bauer, Museum Founder, will present the story of this intriguing man. Starts at 7 p.m. at Diving Museum, mile marker 83 in Islamorada. Immerse yourself in the fun!

Morada Way Arts & Cultural District presents: Third Thursday Art Walk

Showcasing the fine arts, music and culinary nuances of the Purple Isles, the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District features national and local artisans who are showcased in galleries at Morada Way between mile marker 81 and 82 – formerly named Industrial Road – as well as “culinary art” and live music from 6-10 p.m. In addition to individual artists, participating galleries include the Redbone Gallery, Gallery Morada, Pasta Pantaleo Signature Gallery and Bluewater Potters. Free admission. Art Walk is held the third Thursday of each month. This month’s theme is “Kids at heART” featuring children’s events such as painting with local artists, creating the Florida Keys’ longest chalk drawing and learning balloon art.

Key Largo / August 17 – 18

Anything that Floats Regatta Race

Grab your oars and anything that floats and enjoy this family-fun festival – an on-the-water race of vessels crafted from items around the house – with a fireworks show on Blackwater Sound, mile marker 104 bayside, to follow. Captains and crew party Friday 6 p.m. at Senor Frijoles, race at 3 p.m Saturday with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Tropical Heat

Tropical Heat offers four days of All Male-All Adult fever-pitch revelry on the island whose openness and respect for diversity have made it a world-renowned gay vacation destination. The festival includes more than a dozen intriguingly decadent events ranging from drag shows to themed pool parties and gatherings at island clubs.

“Ride It To Win It” Poker Run

To benefit the Upper Keys Wounded Warrior Dive and Deptherapy, offering veterans rehabilitation through scuba diving. The motorcycle ride (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) offers an opportunity to support the troops while having some fun! Five poker-hand stops include Alabama Jack’s (9-11 a.m.), Buzzard’s Roost (10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.), Postcard Inn at Holiday Isle (noon to 2 p.m.), Snapper’s (1:30-3 p.m.) and Gilbert’s (2:30-4:30 p.m.). Three hands for $20, $5 for each additional hand. First place hand wins $500, second place $200 and third place $100.

Key West Fishing Tournament

More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In a March kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.

Third Annual Summer Jam

Slip on your bathing suits and bring your appetite for the Summer Jam pool party at Key West Harbour, with Chef Clive Thompson cooking up one of the finest pig roasts on the island. Howard Livingston and Mile Marker 24 band are slated to perform musical favorites, in addition to the fun family band, The Doerfels; come hungry. Gates open and the music begins at 3 p.m.; general admission tickets are $49 per adult, $24 for children, available for purchase in advance at keystix.com. Key West Harbour will open their docks if you come by boat (call to reserve a spot). Exciting live and silent auctions with unique items up for bid are also on tap. Author’s Pop-Up at Fast Buck Freddie’s Gallery

It’s a treasure-trove for arts lovers. Surrounded by sculpture, paintings and photographic art, more than a dozen area authors are to appear at the temporary Fast Buck Freddie’s Pop-Up Gallery on Duval Street. Among those who will sign their works or present short readings: Mandy Miles’ newly released ‘Only In Key West’; ‘Mick Murphy’ mystery writer Michael Haskins; ; David Sloan ‘Key West Bucket List’ and ‘Ghosts of Key West’; Jonathan Woods ‘Bad Juju & Other Tales of Madness and Mayhem’, among many more.
