Ocean Life Lecture Series 2012

Presented by Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center, visitors are welcome to participate in the new Ocean Life Lecture Series; topics include Coral Spawning in the Florida Keys (March 16); Sea Turtles (April 20); Coral Reefs & Human Systems (May 18); World Oceans Day (June 8); Florida Everglades (July 20). Meet-and-greet- reception is at 6 p.m., lecture begins at 7 p.m. Tickets $10 per adult, students are free. Held at the theater inside the Murray E. Nelson Cultural Center, MM 102.

Islamorada / June 4 – 8

Don Hawley Invitational Tarpon Tournament

The world’s top fly-rod anglers endure a five-day test of will and muscle, fishing Keys waters using fly tackle and either a 12- or 16-pound tippet. Named for the late fly fisherman and conservationist Don Hawley, the tournament benefits the Guides Trust Foundation, assisting professional fishing guides and supporting backcountry fishery conservation programs.

IFC Captains Cup Dolphin Tournament

Just three fish are all that’s needed to capture the $25,000 winner-take-all grand prize, but the aggregate weight of the three dorado must be the highest in the tournament.

Paradise Quilters to Showcase at Marathon Community Theatre

 

Original artwork by members of the Paradise Quilters will be on display at Marathon Community Theatre in conjunction with the playhouse’s presentation of “Forever Plaid” from May 24 thru June 3. Paradise Quilters, with over 70 members from the Middle Keys to Key West, is dedicated to the quilting arts. The group holds a semi-annual quilt show as a major fundraiser. This event enables the group to bring nationally known teachers to The Keys to introduce local quilters to new techniques and stimulate creativity. Much of that creativity will be on show at the Marathon Community Theatre for this exhibit.

Big Pine & the Lower Keys / June 8 – 10

Big Pine & Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament

More than $35,000 in cash and prizes! Any tournament angler who catches a dolphin weighing more than 50 pounds is to earn a cool $20,000. In the youth division, anglers age 15 and under can win rods, reels and trophies. Kickoff is Friday, June 8 and fishing days are June 9-10. Prizes also are presented for the heaviest wahoo and tuna.

Free Key West Hook Kids on Fishing Program

Anglers for Conservation is coordinating a Hook Kids on Fishing program to kick-off the Inaugural Marine Sanctuaries Classic Fishing and Photo Contest. The event is to take place from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., at NOAA’s Eco-Discovery Center in Key West, located directly across from Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.Kids ages 6 to 16, are welcome along with their parents. The first one hundred kids registered will receive a FREE fishing rod & reel, tackle box and fishing trip. Registration is mandatory, visit website for details.
