Key Largo / March 16 – July 20
Presented by Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center, visitors are welcome to participate in the new Ocean Life Lecture Series; topics include Coral Spawning in the Florida Keys (March 16); Sea Turtles (April 20); Coral Reefs & Human Systems (May 18); World Oceans Day (June 8); Florida Everglades (July 20). Meet-and-greet- reception is at 6 p.m., lecture begins at 7 p.m. Tickets $10 per adult, students are free. Held at the theater inside the Murray E. Nelson Cultural Center, MM 102.

Islamorada / May 28
The Matecumbe Historical Trust will hold their annual Memorial Day Service beginning at 9 a.m. at the Islamorada Hurricane Monument, Mile Marker 81.5 Overseas Highway, adjacent to the Matecumbe United Methodist Church. The monument was dedicated in 1937 to honor the Veterans and civilians killed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Irving Eyster, President of the Matecumbe Historical Trust, will make the introductory welcome presentation. The ceremony will include an invocation by Pastor Tony Hammond of Island Community Church, presentation of colors by Boy Scout Troop 914, the National Anthem, the history of the Hurricane Monument given by Historian Irving Eyster, the laying of the memorial wreath and a benediction. The wreath is sponsored by Centennial Bank. The service is open to the public. Residents and visitors are invited to attend in observance of Memorial Day.

Islamorada / June 1 – 3
Hosted by the Islamorada Charterboat Association, this annual event is headquartered at Whale Harbor Marina with $10,000 in prize money. Competition is open to all anglers and there is no limit on the number of anglers that can participate.

Key Largo / June 2
Festivities will be held at the pool on Saturday, June 2nd from 10-12 noon. Admission is free to everyone during the party hours. Anyone entering the pool prior to noon will be welcome to stay and enjoy the facilities all day long. Free food and ice cream will be served. Games, giveaways and raf?e prizes for all!
Islamorada / June 4 – 8
The world’s top fly-rod anglers endure a five-day test of will and muscle, fishing Keys waters using fly tackle and either a 12- or 16-pound tippet. Named for the late fly fisherman and conservationist Don Hawley, the tournament benefits the Guides Trust Foundation, assisting professional fishing guides and supporting backcountry fishery conservation programs.

Marathon / May 24 – June 3
Paradise Quilters to Showcase at Marathon Community Theatre
Original artwork by members of the Paradise Quilters will be on display at Marathon Community Theatre in conjunction with the playhouse’s presentation of “Forever Plaid” from May 24 thru June 3. Paradise Quilters, with over 70 members from the Middle Keys to Key West, is dedicated to the quilting arts. The group holds a semi-annual quilt show as a major fundraiser. This event enables the group to bring nationally known teachers to The Keys to introduce local quilters to new techniques and stimulate creativity. Much of that creativity will be on show at the Marathon Community Theatre for this exhibit.

Marathon / May 24 – June 3
This goofy musical revue centers on four singers killed in a car crash in the 1950s on their way to their first big concert, and they’re fulfilling their dreams posthumously. Anyone purchasing two tickets to a play on any Thursday, other than opening night, will receive $5 off the price of the two tickets. Both tickets must be purchased and paid for in one transaction. Key West / March 17 – November 30
More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In a March kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.

Key West / May 25 – 28
The Southernmost Car Show is presented by the FCPOA (First Class Petty Officer Association) Naval Air Station, Key West. This is an annual benefit Car Show & Festival Weekend that commemorates the birth of the U.S. Navy (Oct. 13, 1775). This year honors the 237th birthday of the Navy with many activities surrounding the car show on Sunday, May 27. Free and open to the public.

Key West / May 31
Celebrate the designation of St. Mary Star of the Sea as a Minor Basilica by the Vatican at a solemn mass with the conferral of the insignia. Located at 1010 Windsor Lane, St. Mary Star of the Sea is the oldest Catholic church in South Florida. Archbishop of Miami Thomas Wenski and Father John Baker of St. Mary are to preside. A ceremonial procession is set for 6:45 p.m. and the mass at 7 p.m. Please arrive early since a large crowd of worshipers is expected.
Key West / June 2
Third Annual Renegade Sunset Run
Sponsored by the Southernmost Seminoles and the Southernmost Runners clubs of Key West. Pre-registration fee is $20 before June 1. On June 2, registration $25 per person. 5K starts at 7 p.m., Higgs Beach at Salute Restaurant, and travels down Atlantic to Bertha to the Blvd. then back to Salute. Pre-race packet to be picked up June 1 between 5-7 p.m. at Salute. Proceeds benefit local scholarships.
